چکیده

[1] Both the Colorado State University (CSU) and Goddard superparameterization GCM (SP-GCM) simulate a superactive Asian summer monsoon with unrealistically enhanced levels of precipitation. The underlying physical mechanism for this monsoon bias in the CSU SP-GCM is shown to involve an enhanced convection-wind-evaporation feedback. The feedback process is studied using two experiments with different fixed specifications of surface evaporation. A regional analysis of an area that exhibits excessive precipitation offers a glimpse of the transient nature of the feedback. Finally, we discuss the broader relevance of the feedback study to climate modeling. Citation: Luo, Z., and G. L. Asian summer monsoon anomalies induced by aerosol direct forcing: the role of the Tibetan Plateau

In this paper we present results of a numerical study using the NASA finite-volume GCM to elucidate a plausible mechanism for aerosol impact on the Asian summer monsoon involving interaction with physical processes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). During the premonsoon season of March–April, dusts from the deserts of western China, Afghanistan/Pakistan, and the Middle East are transported into an...

Monsoonal response to mid-holocene orbital forcing in a high resolution GCM

In this study, we use a sophisticated highresolution atmosphere-ocean coupled climate model, ECEarth, to investigate the effect of Mid-Holocene orbital forcing on summer monsoons on both hemispheres. During the Mid-Holocene (6 ka), there was more summer insolation on the Northern Hemisphere than today, which intensified the meridional temperature and pressure gradients. Over North Africa, monso...

We investigated the effects of large-scale orography on the tropical coupled atmosphere-ocean system over the Indian and Pacific Oceans in northern summer, using the Meteorological Research Institute coupled atmosphere-ocean General Circulation Model (GCM). Six different experiments were conducted with mountain heights of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, and 0% of the standard mountain height. The res...

Precipitation Response to the Gulf Stream in an Atmospheric GCM*

The precipitation response to sea surface temperature (SST) gradients associated with the Gulf Stream is investigated using an atmospheric general circulation model. Forced by observed SST, the model simulates a narrow band of precipitation, surface convergence, and evaporation that closely follows the Gulf Stream, much like satellite observations. Such a Gulf Stream rainband disappears in the ...

Development and Application of a Mesoscale Climate Model for the Tropics: Influence of SST Anomalies on the West African Monsoon

A mesoscale climate model (MCM) is developed from the Pennsylvania State University/ National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU/ NCAR) MM5 model to simulate the West African summer monsoon. Results from the MCM are compared to observations, a reanalysis, and GCM output to show that the MCM reasonably simulates the West African monsoon climate and its variability, and improves on many shortco...
